Meeting her you share the countryside of Normandy in her eyes, a beach where light and water flicker between each other, tones informed by weathered walks, her abundant and beautiful garden and the tides of a familial life.”
キャロラインのテキスタイルアートは、深みのある田舎暮らしだからこその軽やかさと繊細さを持った子供の目、そして、成熟してしなやかさを伴ったアーティストとしての目、それら両方の視点を通して見えてくる自然の雰囲気や動き、そして儚さを、私たちに語りかけてくれます。
彼女のアートとの出会いは、本来そこにある自然と、彼女が本来持っている素養とメソッドに出会うことへとあなたを誘うでしょう。

Caroline Da Costa／キャロライン・ダ・コスタ Profile
Caroline Da Costa was born and grew up in England. As a young adult she began to travel, living in Libya
Lisbon and Istanbul for long periods before settling in Normandy in France 23 years ago.Her creative textiles began in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1974 when, inspired by the painter Botelho, she created a series of wall hangings in fabric representing the very typical houses and roofs of the city.
This was later followed by a six year period in Istanbul, Turkey, which further enabled her to change her style
and sources of inspiration and to explore the very different fabrics available. Now in Normandy close to the sea and with daily walks in the very rural countryside and on the coast, Caroline is totally immersed in nature.
It is the colours and textures of these landscapes and objects and material found during her walks that inspire and motivate her.
Caroline has exhibited her work since 1987 in many places – Lisbon, Istanbul, the Textile Museum in
Heidelberg and in several places in France.
She works playfully and intuitively, responding to what develops from the painting and dyeing of fabrics and paper the results of which are the source of her inspiration.Always exploring new techniques using paper, felt and wool dyed by hand,she often combines with transparent and flimsy fabrics to create poetic and painterly effects. Caroline uses plants to dye her fabrics and eco-prints for very subtle images of leaves and petals.
Dyes, inks, paints and rust also pervade her pieces. Metal and drift wood as well as dried plants often appear
in her textiles bringing a poetic sense of the transitory.
キャロライン・ダ・コスタは、英国に生まれ育つ。若き青年時代に旅を始め、23年前フランスのノルマンディーを居住地として定める以前に、リビヤ、リスボン、インスタンブールに長期滞在した。
彼女の創造的なテキスタイル制作は、画家ボテルホからの影響を受け、1974年にポルトガルのリスボンにて始まり、その地域の典型的な家屋や屋根を象徴する布製の壁掛けシリーズを制作した。
その制作は、6年の歳月をかけてトルコ・イスタンブールの地に引き継がれていき、そのことが彼女自身のスタイル及びインスピレーションの源に変化をもたらし、その地における異色のファブリックへの探求をもたらした。
現在は、ノルマンディーの海にほど近い場所にて、海岸線と農村を毎日散歩をしながら、キャロライン自身がまさに自然と融合する日々の中で、制作に取り組んでいる。
それらの風景の中を日々歩む中で出会う色彩・テクスチャー・オブジェが、彼女を刺激し、彼女自身のモチベーションとなっている。
キャロラインは、1987年以降、各国で展示を行っている。ーリスボン、イスタンブール、ハイデルバーグのテキスタイル博物館、フランス国内数カ所。
彼女の制作は、遊びと直感に満ちており、彼女のインスピレーションの源となっているペインティング、布染や紙染に顕われるものへのレスポンスである。
常に、紙・フェルト・毛を手で染めるなどといった新たな技術を模索し、等価性のある素材を組み合わせたりするなどして、詩的かつ絵画的効果を探求している。
キャロラインは、葉や花弁の非常に微細なイメージを表現するために、植物染やエコプリントなどを取り入れている。
染料、インク、画材や錆もまた彼女の作品に浸透している。
金属や漂流してきた木材、乾燥した植物などもまた、一瞬を詩的に表現するものとして、彼女の作品に使われている。

あなたの作品を初めてSiddさんから見せていただいた時、あなたの人生の深くて大きな川の流れを感じて、共鳴し、心にやすらぎの感覚が戻りました。
ゆったりとした時間軸の中に紡がれた美しい自然界の恩寵。
私の中に、また多くの日本の友人たちに、このような優美な時間を大切にする
ことの価値を思い起こさせてくださる作品たちです。
あなたの作品たちから聞こえて来る波の音や、かすかな木々の擦れる音。
糸を織ることや、染めること、刺繍をすることなどによってもたらされるテキスタイルとのコミュニケーションはまるで美しい詩のようです。
海岸沿いでのお散歩、落ち葉拾いや、貝殻を集めたり〜〜。流木との戯れや、小鳥たちの歌。
キャロラインさんの日常のふとした瞬間の感動を勝手に想像してしまいます。
自分の受けとる感覚がなにやらじんわりと込み上げて
さざ波のように潤ってきたり、ゆるんできたり、研ぎ澄まされたりと変わっていくのを感じます。
鮮やかな時と、深く静まる時たちとの交流。
ダイナミックで繊細な自然界からのインスピレーションに、ふくよかな
気づきを与えてくださる作品たちに感謝します。
そして何よりも新しい作品を連れて日本にきてくださることに興奮を覚えます。

Dear Caroline,
I am so delightful to welcome you and hold your exhibition to introduce you and your art at our gallery in April.
When I was first introduced your art pieces by Siddehna, I had feelings of depth and flow of your life like a river and I found myself resonating and finding peace in me.
I found grace weaved with the slow timeline in beautiful nature in your art. It reminds me and many of our friends in Japan to value our graceful time.
From your pieces, I can hear the sounds such as the sound of wave and trees rubbing each other. Communications brought by knitting yarn, dyeing and embroidery are just like a beautiful poetry. They have allowed me to imagine your moment-to-moment joy in your daily life with taking a walk seaside, picking up leaves, collecting seashells, playing with drift woods and birds’ singing.
I can feel my sense of receptivity swelling and changing in myself…moisturized, loosened and even sharpened.
Interaction of vividness and silence in time.
I truly appreciate your art pieces allowing us to receive rich awareness with dynamic and sensitive inspirations from nature. And above all, I feel an excitement that you will come and visit Japan with your new art pieces.
Here in Japan, we also have our beautiful culture of knitting, dyeing and embroider. I hope you will meet and enjoy them in Kyoto.
